Research at the museum

The Bergen Maritime Museum is renowned for its research. In addition to the Norwegian Yearbook of Maritime History, the museum has, over the years, been involved in several large research projects.

The museum aims to strengthen its research activities, including by way of more collaboration with the University of Bergen and other relevant research institutions nationally and internationally.

The museum also encourages more master students to do research on maritime history. Through “Norsk sjøfartshistorisk forskningsfond”, the Bergen Maritime Museum offers a scholarship to master students during the last year of their studies.

The Norwegian Yearbook of Maritime History

The Norwegian Yearbook of Maritime History was published for the first time in 1965, with Lauritz Pettersen and Atle Thowsen as editors. The articles have since then covered a wide range of maritime topics for general readers and academia alike.

The journal is classified as a level 1 scientific journal (more information here)

Most articles are in Norwegian, but we usually also include an English article. Each issue of the journal usually includes three articles.

If you have a proposal for an article, please send a brief summary to director/editor Per Kristian Sebak by email.
